MEXICO: Avocados, third largest revenue source for Michoacan

The avocado sector remains the third largest source of revenue for the Mexican state of Michoacan, given how the export of more than one million tonnes generates over one billion dollars in turnover per year. This figure could also increase, given the possible introduction of at least another 30,000 hectares; a dynamic in which Uruapan plays an important role with its more than 15,000 hectares, together with the neighbouring municipality of Tancítaro, which has some 35,000 hectares.

According to those involved in the avocado sector, the city of Uruapan is also the epicentre of all decision-making around the “green gold”, as this is where the Association of Producers and Exporting Packers of Avocados of Michoacan (APEAM), the State Plant Health Committee, the Union of Packers and Traders of Avocados of Michoacan (UDECAM), the National Committee of Sistema Producto Aguacate (CONASIPRO), the National Council of Avocado Producers (CONAPA) and the Michoacan Avocado Commission (COMA) are all based.

19 years after the re-opening of the US border, following an 80 year veto due to phytosanitary reasons, the crop has actually consolidated as the main product for Michoacan, with sustained growth trends.
