KENYA: Couple turns to passion fruit farming to boost their income     INDIA: Govt offers pineapple growers ‘weed-resistant, high-yield’ cultivation method

While most people are staying at home due to the disruption of day-to-day activities by the Covid-19 pandemic, one couple in Uasin Gishu County is making the best out of it.     To intensify pineapple cultivation in the state, the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) centre in Tripura has designed a high-density, weed-resistant, climate-resilient pineapple cultivation technology.

CAMBODIA: Yellow banana exports soar 150% in first half     PHILIPPINES: Banana exporters may lose big China market to Vietnam

Cambodia has exported 147,760 tonnes of fresh yellow bananas to the international market this year as of Wednesday, soaring a whopping 150% over the same time last year, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Veng Sakhon said.     Philippines, one of the most badly hit countries by COVID-19 pandemic across Asia, may see a decline in banana exports moving forward, thanks to the government’s failure to contain the deadly and highly contagious virus.

INDIA: Papaya farmers excluded in procurement plan, suffer losses     CUBA: New pineapple variety to boost country’s exports

A farmer who would sell his papaya produce at Rs 18 (USD 0.24) per kg before the coronavirus outbreak, says that about 3-4 tonnes of ripening fruits on his 4-acre patch of land comprising 4,000 trees, remain unharvested.     The Cuban Ministry of Agriculture stated that Cuban farmers had a new pineapple variety that is “more resistant to pests and that has better possibilities to be used by the industry.”

INDIA: Easing of lockdown curbs helps banana growers to export     MALAYSIA: Felda Global Ventures targets one million banana clones in 2021

With the easing of lockdown curbs, banana growers from Ardhapur tehsil in Maharashtra’s Nanded district have started getting demands for export of the fruit to Gulf countries, helping them fetch a better price for their produce.     What began as a banana clonal research has led to an opportunity for FGV Holdings Bhd to mass produce high-quality banana clone varieties.
