  VIETNAM: Japan increases Vietnamese banana imports     COSTA RICA: Calling on natural defenses to turn back banana pandemic  
               
  According to AEON Co Ltd, Vietnamese bananas gain foothold in Japan thanks to their competitive prices, and a good taste.     MUSA research focuses on rhizosphere microbiology and how they may help to prime banana plants’ natural defenses and sustain its roots.  
               
  SWITZERLAND: Generating energy from banana peel     PHILIPPINES: Bananas get promotion boost  
               
  A study by researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne aims to extract hydrogen from biomass made up of banana peels.     The Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) has committed P3m (USD570,000) to fund a new Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA) marketing campaign in Japan.

  Hongxing Global Agri-Wholesale fruit trading center in the city of Changsha is one of the largest banana ripening centers in South-Central China     The Ecuadorian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and BanEcuador presented a proposal “to relieve financial pressure” faced by banana producers due to the war in Ukraine.

  A heavy storm recently destroyed banana fields and felled the rows of plants that farmers were nurturing for harvest and market.     Farmers engaged in banana cultivation are lamenting that the government has left them to fend for themselves after the recent rain coupled with strong winds destroyed hundreds of their banana plants in Trichy district.

  Australian mango growers will benefit from a A$2.7m (USD1.9m)injection into extension and communication projects.     Mango farmers' dreams of raking in big profits were shattered by an unusual spike in temperatures coupled with water shortages and unexpected windstorms in the months of March and April.

  Pineapple leaf fibres could hold the key to cheaper weight-loss supplements with the added benefit of being greener and more sustainable for the environment.     Pineapple farmers from Vazhakkulam distributed 10,001 best-quality pineapples free of cost to people in the Thrikkakara Assembly constituency to protest against what they said was a steep fall in demand for the fruit and subsequent dip in prices.  
               
  JAPAN: New pineapple variety registered with MAFF     THE BAHAMAS: “Sweetest” pineapple festival is back  
               
  Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) has given temporary legal protection to the pineapple variety Tainung No. 23.     The popular Pineapple Festival in Eleuthera will run June 3-4 on the island of Eleuthera, the heart of the country’s pineapple industry.  
               
  BRAZIL: World’s tallest papaya tree discovered     INDIA: Invasive pest, Thrips parvispinus, a major threat to agriculture  
               
  Brazilians Tarcísio Foltz and Gilberto Franz (both Brazil) discovered the world’s tallest papaya tree, standing at 14.55 m (47 ft and 8.83 in) tall.     Black thrips, a highly polyphagous pest has become a major insect pest in recent days for papaya, chili, and capsicum crops in India.

  Durian fans, especially those who love premium varieties like Musang King and Black Thorn, will have to deal with an expected 100% price increase during this year’s durian season.     The first cargo train fully loaded with Thai durian reached China through the new Chinese-Lao railway service.
