TROPICAL FRUIT NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

AUSTRALIA: Devastating banana freckle disease found in Northern Territory     PERU: Organic banana exports fell by 20% in the first quarter of the year

The first discovery of banana freckle disease since 2019 in the Northern Territory sparks fears of an outbreak that could threaten the local banana industry.     Peruvian organic banana exports contracted by 20% in the first quarter of the year over the same period of 2021, totaling 46,550 tons worth 32.6 million dollars.

INDIA: After record lows, banana prices skyrocket in Bengaluru     PHILIPPINES: Banana growers plead for Japanese consumers to bear price hikes

Traders say supply crunch occurred as many farmers gave up on cultivating bananas as they received some of the lowest prices ever during the two years of COVID-19.     The Philippines appealed directly to consumers in its top export market Japan to pay higher prices for imported bananas to help shoulder a surge in production costs.

KENYA: Climate change impacts on banana yields in Murang’a     CHINA: Banana imports from Vietnam increases

Adverse effects of climate change have hit many farmers in Murang’a County in the recent past leading to poor food production and meager returns.     According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, Vietnam exported 740,000 tons of bananas to China between January and May, up 10% from last year.

INDIA: King of fruits, mango, falls victim to climate change     BANGLADESH: Fruit bags promise high quality mangoes

An estimated 80 percent of mango has been lost after blistering heat waves during the hottest March and April in decades damaged mango flowers, while erratic rainfall helped pests breed in fruit orchards.     Unlike traditional mango growers, bagged fruits are guaranteed to reach the market barring any unforeseeable circumstance during transport.

PHILIPPINES: 9 new varieties that will strengthen the mango industry     INDIA: Mango jelly biz declines on fruit shortage

Nine mango varieties and selections were unveiled at a press conference of the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD).     Mango jelly production has reduced by 60% due to low supply of fruits and shortage of labor caused by COVID-19 in rural areas.

MALAYSIA: Pineapple exports rise to USD 250M last year     UAE: Dubai pineapple pioneer using modern methods to help tropical fruit thrive

The value of Malaysia’s pineapple exports rose to RM1.1 billion (USD 250M) last year from RM642 million in 2020 (USD 146M), Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Industries I Datuk Seri Ahmad Hamzah said.     An Emereti businessman is growing pineapples using hydroponics in greenhouses, resulting in large and juicy fruits weighing 3-5 kgs.

MEXICO: Government to prohibit subcontracting of avocado, berry pickers     USA: Storing avocados in water isn’t safe, despite what you see on TikTok

Mexico said it would prohibit subcontracting of day laborers in the avocado and berry industries, partly to ensure companies complied with requirements under the country’s trade agreement with the United States and Canada.     The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning Americans to stop storing cut avocados in water because they could be exposed to harmful pathogens.

NEW ZEALAND: Avocado exports take a knock, but it’s not all bad news     PERU: 515,000 tons of Hass avocado to be exported this season

Chaos in the shipping industry has contributed to avocado exports plunging in the past year – although the tough times for growers mean a silver lining for local avocado lovers.     The president of the Association of Hass Avocado Producers of Peru highlighted that Europe is the main market for Peru’s Hass avocado, accounting for 70% of the country’s exports.

THAILAND: Fruit exports ride on health trend     SINGAPORE: Durian prices in Singapore drop due to surprise bumper crop, reversing earlier projections

From the crunchy yellow flesh of the jackfruit to the natural coconut water, Thailand’s diversified fruit exports have been gaining ground among health-conscious consumers around the world.     Despite earlier projections of a shortage of durians from Malaysia that would cause prices to increase, a surprise bumper crop and tough competition have resulted in prices dropping by USD5 a kg.

VIETNAM: High fruit production estimated in 2022     CHINA: Yellow pitaya takes root in Hainan

According to Le Thanh Tung, deputy director of the department of crop production, the output of Southern key fruit trees in 2022 is estimated at over 7.3 million tonnes.     Yellow pitaya, originally from South America, has taken root across the tropical island of south China’s Hainan Province, some 17,000 km away from their birthplace.
