TROPICAL FRUIT NEWS

INDIA: UAE-bound first consignment of banana plant products flagged off from Varanasi     HONDURAS: Banana industry generates USD 419 million in seven months

APEDA has facilitated the first-ever consignment of banana plant products from Varanasi to the UAE by air, boosting agricultural exports.     Bananas, one of the agricultural products most affected by storms Eta and Iota in November 2020, generated $419.4 million between January and July 2023

SOUTH KOREA: Tariffs on Philippine banana, pineapple to be scrapped     KENYA: Banana farmers in Taita Taveta trained on pest, disease control

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said the tariffs on the country’s banana and processed pineapple exports to South Korea would gradually be eliminated after the signing of a free trade agreement (FTA)     Farmers in Taita Taveta county have been trained on better agronomy in banana farming toincrease crop yield, boost food security and improve their income.

ITALY: Mango production on the rise as climate warms     AUSTRALIA: Mango lovers told to prepare for an undersupply of the tropical fruit as warm winter reduces yield

Mango farming in Italy is becoming more widespread as hotter temperatures and the prospect of higher profit margins lead growing numbers of farmers to quit traditional crops in favour of exotic fruit.     A warmer-than-average Queensland winter will see fewer Australian mangoes on supermarket shelves this Christmas as the weather has been too balmy for fruit set.

INDIA: Mango exports via Bengaluru airport grows by 124% in 2023     OMAN: MAFWR initiates mango farming through RO1.25mn project

Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru has recorded a 124% increase in mango exports compared to the previous year.     Oman, a nation reliant on imported mangoes, is steering its attention toward sustainable farming of mangoes locally.

USA: It’s brightening up for Hawaiian papaya growers     SINGAPORE: Sales of pineapples, pineapple cakes spike after Tharman’s win at the polls

This year is shaping up to be a huge boon for Hawaii papaya growers as demand for the only American-grown papaya is increasing among mainland tropical fruit consumers.     From prata to soju to cakes, eateries and bars have been rolling out pineapple-related promotions in the light of Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s victory, where he secured 70.4 per cent of the vote.

MALAYSIA: Pineapple contract farm model increases skill, income of young agropreneurs     INDIA: Scorching heat to impact pineapple cultivation in the long term

The “contract farm” model for pineapple cultivation improves youth skills and generates income in a challenging economic climate, said the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (MPIB).     The recent spell of scorching heat will have an adverse impact on pineapple cultivation for a long time, affecting both the health of plants as well as production in the coming season.

AUSTRALIA: Thai trial success for West Australian avocados     NEW ZEALAND: Avocado industry challenges, science-led change needed

West Australian avocado growers have successfully shipped a verification shipment of Hass avocados to Thailand after gaining access in May.     Plant physiologists said the industry’s ambitious target was unlikely to be hit without a heavy dose of science-led change to overcome challenges.

CHINA: Demand for durian has soared 400%, fueled by China’s ‘craze’     VIETNAM: China grows more dragon fruit, reduces imports from Vietnam

Over the past two years, China imported $6 billion worth of durians — accounting for 91% of global demand, HSBC’s ASEAN Economist Aris Dacanay said.     China is expanding the cultivation of red-fleshed dragon fruit, which sells at lower prices than imports from Vietnam.
