TROPICAL FRUIT NEWS

UGANDA: Company turns banana fiber into sustainable handicrafts     UK: Government accused of plan to further cut cost of bananas at expense of poorest African producers

Local startup Texfad is buying banana stems and turns the fiber into attractive handicrafts such as rugs, lampshades, and even hair extensions.

UK is refusing to commit to EU pledge to stop cutting tariffs on big producers despite bananas being as cheap today as three decades ago.

NEW ZEALAND: Banana ‘shortage based on seasonal demand’, says Dole     INDIA: Virus hits banana crop, help sought from agri varsity

New Zealanders are bananas for bananas, but the country relies on imports from Mexico, Ecuador and the Philippines for its supply.     The Jalgaon district administration has sought the help of Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth Rahuri to understand the spread and cause of ‘cucumber mosaic virus’ that affected banana plantations.

INDIA: Mango exports rose 19% in April-Aug. as 41 countries bought fruit     MENA: Climate change sours ripening taste for mango

Mango exports from India have risen 19% in the first five months of 2023-24, with the U.S. importing more than 2,000 metric tonnes of the pulpy fruit.     The Middle East’s up-and-coming mango farmers must contend with a challenge all too familiar to the industry’s heavyweights: climate change,

AUSTRALIA: Mango prices on rise as harvest yields fall by more than half across Australia’s Top End     PERU: Fresh mango exports soared in September

This summer West Australian shoppers are being told to expect to pay upwards of four to five dollars for the seasonal fruit.     From August 1 to October 2 of this year, Peru exported 2,447,543 kilos of fresh mango, almost 10 times more than last year.

PHILIPPINES: Japan signs MOA with PCCI to increase trade and investments, including pineapples and bananas     INDIA: Good times for pineapple vendors in state

While signing the MOA, the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry representative said that climate change has reduced the quality of bananas and pineapples from the Philippines.     It's a good time for pineapple farmers in Kerala as farmgate prices of pineapples have increased by Rs12, and even higher for market prices.

MALAYSIA: Collaborative pineapple farming takes off in Rompin     CANADA: Say aloha to the Maui Gold pineapple, with a $90 price tag

Pineapple contract farming has proven to be successful in increasing income for planters, especially youths.     Maui Gold pineapples — prized by aficionados for their sweetness, as well as notes of coconut and mango — are now available in Canada

KENYA: New tech to control papaya mealybug pest in the Coast     CHILE: Market open for Brazilian papaya

Researchers at the Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (Cabi) have introduced a parasitic wasp, a natural predator, to coastal counties to help control the papaya mealybug pest.     Brazil and Chile have completed their trade agreement for papaya, following the review of certificates and on-site audits of phytosanitary requirements.

ITALY: As temperatures rise, Sicily turns to tropical fruits     PAPUA NEW GUINEA: District taps in avocado

Avocados, mangos, bananas and passion fruit — a wealth of tropical produce is growing under the shadow of Sicily’s Mount Etna, as the Italian island’s farmers adapt to global warming.     The Kainantu district development authority in Eastern Highlands province has embarked on commercializing avocado going forward.

VIETNAM: Booming durian crop size worries authorities     CHINA: Malaysia to satisfy national durian craving as import talks accelerate

Vietnam’s durian growing area has been expanding on average 24.5% annually since 2010 to 131,000 hectares now, the fastest among its key crops, leaving authorities concerned about oversupply.     Chinese and Malaysian officials are in talks about opening the former country’s enormous market to exports of the latter’s fresh durians, as appetites grow for the famously pungent tropical fruits.

INDIA: Dragonfruit is now grown in 2,000 acres in Karnakata     MALAYSIA: Jackfruit in demand

Dragon fruit is cultivated on over 2,000 acres across Karnataka and avocado on at least 1,000 acres, according to Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) scientists.     The Malaysian jackfruit, with its unique sweetness, crunchy texture, and golden yellow colour, has piqued the interest of Chinese importers after its debut in China in September, say industry players.
