TROPICAL FRUIT NEWS

ARGENTINA: Paraguay and Bolivia resume banana exports     AUSTRALIA: Groundbreaking Japan voyage for Australian bananas and melons

Banana producers in Paraguay and Bolivia have agreed to resume shipments to Argentina after the outgoing administration authorized the use of foreign currency to pay for those imports.     Queensland-grown bananas and melons have been shipped to Japan, in an Australia-first trial aimed at breaking into the potentially lucrative Japanese market.

THAILAND: Banana exporters aim to send more to Japan     RUSSIA: Sharp rise in banana prices, crossing 1.4 euros per kilogram

Thailand has recently signed the deal to export 5,000 tons of bananas to Japan after a labour shortage during the previous government hampered the order.     Last October, banana prices in Russia surged to 1.43 euros per kilogram for the first time mainly due to the weakening ruble.

SAINT LUCIA: Banana production increases but authorities concerned about Black Sigatoka disease     CAMBODIA: Banana exports experience decline of nearly 24%:

As Saint Lucia's banana industry recovers from tropical storm Bret, growers are concerned of the Black Sigatoka disease.     Cambodia exported over 260,000 tonnes of fresh bananas to international markets in the first 11 months of 2023, a decrease of nearly 24% compared to the same period last year.

INDIA: First of Malawi mangoes excite consumers     AUSTRALIA: R2E2 mangoes touch down in California selling for $14 each

Malawi mangoes, which are identical to Alphonso in taste and texture, arrived in Vashi APMC fruit market from East Africa and were sold within minutes.     Mangoes from the Northern Territory touched down in Los Angeles this week and are selling for $US8.99 each, which in Australian dollars is nearly $14 a mango.

JAPAN: Australia keen to boost mango exports after curbs eased     EGYPT: Climate change hits mango farmers as Egypt swelters in never-ending summer

Australia is seeking to increase mango exports to Japan following the recent removal of restrictions on the varieties of the fruit that can be shipped to a market it sees as having growth potential.     Summer in Egypt was so hot this year that the managers of a 40-hectare orchard in the Nile Delta had to wrap each fruit on its mango trees with paper to shield them from the heat.

CHINA: CIIE Visitors Throng for ‘World’s Sweetest Pineapple’     INDONESIA: 4,176 tons of pineapples exported to China

Benin’s sugarloaf pineapple, dubbed ‘the sweetest pineapple in the world,’ is on show for the first time at the ongoing China International Import Expo in Shanghai and long queues are forming to taste it.     The head of the Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) Sahat Manaor Panggabean released 4,176 tons of fresh pineapple from Lampung to be exported to China.

MALAYSIA: MS16 pineapples expected to enter market in 2025     INDIA: As rubber and spices growers switch over, pineapple prices slump

Cultivation of the MS16 pineapple would begin next year through selected growers after a decade of research on the pineapple by MARDI.     Rising production, thanks to increased area under the crop, coupled with a subdued upcountry demand due to surplus supply has resulted in pineapple prices dropping 45 per cent compared with last year.

MOROCCO: Avocado imports growing despite steady local production     SPAIN: It’s too dry for once-thriving avocado industry

The import of avocados in Morocco will hit a record high this year, despite having a well-developed local production sector.     As temperatures rise and reservoirs run dry, the southern coast of Spain is struggling to support commercial avocado farms.

USA: Dole launches dragon fruit program     MALAYSIA: Fresh durian set for China debut

Dole Food Company announced it is now offering high quality dragon fruit to consumers across the western United States and Canada.     Malaysia’s fresh durian is expected to debut in China next year, presenting an exciting new business opportunity for Malaysian durian farmers.
