The world production of banana is estimated at 72.2 million tonnes unit in 2005. It is a very important fruits species in Asia, with India ranking first in global banana production (23.3%), followed by China (9.3%), the Philippine (8.7%), Indonesia (6.2%) and Thailand (2.8%). The other major banana producing continents are from South and Centred America. Brazil rank second in the global producer accounting for 9.4% of 2005 banana production, followed by Ecuador (8.5%), Mexico (3.1%) and Costa Rica (3.1%). |

In 2005, an estimated 17.8 million mt of banana were exported with Ecuador capturing 26.8% of the global market share. Other South and Centred American major banana-exporting county are Costa Rica (10%), Colombia (9.1%), and Guatemala (6.4%). The Philippines is the major exporting country in Asia, accounting for 10.1% of the global export market. |

On the demand side, USA was the major importing country of banana in 2005 accounting for 25.1% of global banana import. The major importing countries in Europe accounted for almost 30% of the total banana import in 2005. These countries are Germany (7.7%), Belgium (6.4%), Russian Federation (5.7%), United Kingdom (5.5%), and Italy (3.7%). Japan (7.0%) ranked as the third largest banana importing country in 2005. |
