  Indonesian durian symposium a roaring success  
 

 
  The 2nd International Symposium on Durian and Other Tropical Fruits (ISODOTF 2021) was successfully organized by the Indonesian Tropical Fruits Research Institute, the Indonesian Center for Horticultural Research and Development, the Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development, and the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture.  
           
       
         
  XII International Symposium on Banana, with focus on organic production      
       
  The symposium will be co-organized by the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT and Centre de Recherche Agronomique pour le dévelopment (Cirad) as part of IHC 2022.  
           
 

Supporting tropical fruit companies and producer organizations to make operations more sustainable and resilient

FAO’s Responsible Tropical Fruits project was introduced to the public in March 2021, and a special session was organized to introduce the project to members of TFNet in May 2021.

  IAEA: Combatting the Banana Wilt Pandemic with Nuclear Science UK: Compass bans airfreighted fruit and veg  
       
  Working hand in hand with experts in South America, the IAEA, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), is using nuclear science to combat, manage and prevent the spread of this disease, save livelihoods and ensure food security. British foodservice multinational Compass Group has banned the use of airfreight for the procurement of fresh fruit and vegetables across its entire UK and Ireland operation.  
   
  AUSTRALIA: TC Niran impacted banana farms nearing full production after QRIDA disaster assistance boost MALAYSIA: Students make plastic wrapper substitute from banana stems  
   
  After cyclonic winds, associated with tropical cyclone Niran, devastated the Capricorn Coast’s banana industry in early March, several banana farms are now getting back to full production. Three Form Four students of SM I.J. Convent here won second prize at the National Tinkering Challenge 2021 held in Kuala Lumpur recently for developing packaging material from banana stems.

  Scientists in Pakistan’s southeast Sindh province have begun extracting fiber from banana waste in what textile industry stakeholders and farmers hope could become an alternative to cotton. Honduran banana exports continue to feel the impact of hurricanes Eta and Iota, which struck Central America country at the end of 2020.  
   
  PHILIPPINES: Mango farmers urged to manage tree canopy to raise fruit quality CAMBODIA: Mango exports boom, but farmers face challenges  
   
  Mango farmers who do not properly manage canopy growth run the risk of less productive cultivation because the overlap in trees forces fruit to grow in the shade, to the detriment of quality and harvest volume, agronomists said. Leaders have pitched agriculture exports as an economic opportunity, but Cambodian farmers need both more advanced and more sustainable farming practices, as well as more stable prices and buyers, to ensure they can profit from their products.  
   
  JAPAN: Mangoes grown with hot spring heat in wintry Hokkaido make overseas debut INDIA: After unseasonal rain, now fog likely to impact fruit setting of cashew, mango trees  
   
  A mango producer in northern Japan’s Hokkaido which grows the tropical fruit using heat from local hot springs and harvests them in winter has begun shipping to high-end supermarkets in Hong Kong in December. Consistent incidents of fog in the mornings for a prolonged are likely to impact the cashew and mango fruit setting process, say agriculture experts.  
   
  MALAYSIA: 151 pineapple farmers incur losses due to floods MALAYSIA: Pineapple cultivation helps Iban community generate income  
   
  The floods that hit some states since have resulted in 151 pineapple farmers incurring losses from the 125.9 hectares affected by the disaster. Fertile peat soils have enabled the Iban community in Kampung Sumping in Muara Payang here, become one of the top pineapple producers for the district.  
   
  JAMAICA: Pineapple Growers Association raises concern over cost of fertilizer KENYA: Country tops Africa’s avocado exports  
   
  President of the association Everton Farquharson, told Irie FM news that the cost of the fertilizer which is needed to improve crop yield, continues to increase almost, every month. Kenya topped Africa’s avocado exports last year and was among the world’s top 10 producers, with Murang’a leading with 31 percent of total production.

  The U.S. is set to allow avocado imports from the Mexican state of Jalisco, officially beginning in June 2022. This year is on track to be the last year Michoacán will be the only Mexican state supplying the U.S. with avocados for the Super Bowl.
The Ministry of Agriculture has announced the opening of another avocado market in India, providing opportunity for the crop’s stakeholders and farmers to export the product to overseas markets.

  ECUADOR: Banana exports flat in 2021 PARAGUAY: A new banana export record achieved in 2021  
   
  Ecuadorean banana exports rallied in the fourth quarter of 2021 to finish the year on 378.2m boxes according to the latest figures from Acorbanec. Paraguayan banana exports generated a total of 19.3 million dollars in 2021, according to data from the Single Window of Export (VUE) of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC).  
   
  ETHIOPIA: Is enset the ‘wondercrop’ for climate change? CHINA: Banana imports from Cambodia up to 377,000 tons in 2021  
   
  Scientists say the plant enset, an Ethiopian staple, could be a new superfood and a lifesaver in the face of climate change. Cambodia exported 7.98 million tons of agricultural products in 2021, a year-on-year increase of 63.8%.  
   
  INDIA: Country to export mangoes to US; import cherries PAKISTAN: Kenyan market for kinnow, mango on the cards  
   
  The US has approved import of mangoes and pomegranates from India and secured New Delhi’s approval to supply of cherries, alfalfa hay, pork and pork products to India, the two governments said in separate statements. The joint extensive efforts by PFVA & DPP have paved the way for Pakistan’s huge revenue generation from the important international market of Kenya in Africa.  
   
  MALAYSIA: 90% of pineapple entrepreneurs raise their income bracket THAILAND: Department to provide training to fruit farmers to avoid being banned by China  
   
  A study conducted by the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) found that 90 per cent of pineapple entrepreneurs, has removed them from the low-income household group (B40) bracket. The Department of Agriculture will provide training on the use of insecticides approved by foreign markets as well as the prevention of Covid-19 contamination on exported fruits.  
   
  SOUTH AFRICA: New cultivar excels on historic citrus farm INFO: Colorful genomic story of Lychee fruit  
   
  The Roberts family planted the first citrus trees on the original Baddaford farm, outside Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape, in 1903. In 1908, the first fruit was exported in wooden crates. Now, scientists have used genomics to peer even deeper into the lychee’s history. Uncovered insights could help shape the species’ future.  
   
  CHINA: New records set for durian imports in 2021 despite pandemic KENYA: Commercialization of jackfruit In Busia  
   
  China’s durian imports between January and November reached a volume of over 809,000 metric tons and a value of $4.13 billion. Kenya’s Busia county, near the border with Uganda, is promoting jackfruit because it is ecologically adapted to the area
