Following the Embassy of Peru’s expression of interest in collaborating with the International Tropical Fruits Network (TFNet) to expand tropical fruit trade and explore potential membership, the TFNet Secretariat led by CEO Muhamed Salim bin Mohd Ali, paid a courtesy visit to the Embassy of Peru in Kuala Lumpur on 22 July 2025.
They met with His Excellency Ambassador Ricardo Morote and Deputy Head of Mission Carlos Castillo.
Peru showcases a diverse landscape, with ecosystems that include the Amazon rainforest, the Andes mountains, and coastal regions. This diversity and different agroclimatic zones are the driving force in the country’s efforts to grow and develop a wide range of crops and a variety of tropical fruits for the domestic as well as export markets. The tropical fruits developed include avocado, various citrus fruits, pomegranate, mango, papaya, banana, passion fruit, guava, and soursop.
Ambassador Morote outlined the strengths of Peru’s fruit industry, highlighting its success as a major exporter of avocado, blueberries and mango. He sought TFNet’s perspective on the opportunities for exporting these fruits to Malaysia and the region. The discussion extended beyond trade, encompassing potential collaboration in knowledge sharing programs, consultancy projects, and access to genetic resources. TFNet CEO provided an overview of TFNet’s role, prompting discussion on Peru potentially serving as a TFNet contact hub for Latin America and the involvement of Peruvian Industry players in TFNet’s membership.
The productive meeting marks the initiation of TFNet’s engagement in Latin America.
