The International Tropical Fruits Network (TFNet) led by CEO Mr. Muhamed Salim bin Mohd Ali paid a courtesy visit to the South African High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 13 May 2026. Mr. Christian Cangao, Information Officer, accompanied the CEO.

They were welcomed by Ms. Alleta N. Maseko, First Secretary and OIC Chargé d’affaires of the South African High Commission, and Ms. Chang Hou Yea, Marketing Officer.

Mr. Salim gave an overview of TFNet’s mandate and programmes, as well as the benefits of becoming a Country Member. He provided examples of previous activities that TFNet has organized, including the recent Saudi Arabia project and the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board’s study visit to pineapple companies in the Philippines. He then offered to conduct similar services for South Africa once they join TFNet.

Ms. Maseko also expressed interest in the trade database being developed by TFNet, believing that a reliable list of importers and exporters can help expand the trade value chain amongst tropical fruit exporting countries.

After the presentation, Ms. Maseko expressed that South Africa can benefit by joining TFNet as a Country Member. She promised to extend the membership invitation to the South African Department of Agriculture.

South Africa is a powerhouse in fruit production and trade, wherein up to 50% of agricultural exports are fruits. Because of South Africa’s diverse climate, they are able to grow a wide variety of fruits: from temperate staples such as apples, pears, peaches, grapes, and plums to tropical favorites such as mango, pineapple, banana, avocado, lychee, and passion fruit.
