Photos by Shree Padre.

A symposium on “Jackfruit and Breadfruit in the Tropics: Genetic Diversity, Marketing, and Value Addition” was organized by the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) on 15-16 May 2014.

The symposium focused on jackfruit and breadfruit genetic diversity and geographical spread, production technologies and innovation needs, processing and value addition, post-harvest management and preservation technologies, strategies and forward market linkages, and human resource development on technology and marketing.

Multiple varieties of jackfruits in varying color, taste and size were on display. Processed jackfruit products such as bonda, papad, chips, juice, chocolates, peda and halwa were on display by farmer groups, NGOs and private companies.

Nice to see so many products from the Jackfruit. Excellent Photos too. The efforts of the UAS is laudable. Today the demand is for processed / easy to use food items. The Jack though loved by many, because of the size and cumbersome processing is not easily accepted. The availability of processed & value added items will find favour with the Jack Lovers. Complements to ShreePadre for the lovely photos and the untiring work being done in this direction.

Great attempt…! Dissemination of knowledge about the various forms in which Jackfruits can be converted and used as food items is all the more praiseworthy. Status of Jackfruit is getting elevated. My sincere appreciations to the organisers!
