TROPICAL FRUIT NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

ECUADOR: Deadly banana fungus puts world’s top exporter on high alert     MALAYSIA: Harumanis mangoes record USD 5.4m in online sales

Ecuador, the world’s biggest banana exporter, is on high alert for its vital crop as neighboring Peru grapples with an outbreak of a fungus deadly to the tropical fruit.     The online sale of Harumanis mangoes received an encouraging response, with a sales value of RM22 million (USD 5.4 million) from April, said Agriculture Department director-general, Datuk Mohd Nasir Warris.

MALAYSIA: Making vinegar products out of overripe pineapples in Tamparuli     USA: Can ‘banana buffers’ save California from wildfires?

A team of University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) researchers has taken the initiative to teach Tamparuli villagers how to transform overripe pineapples into vinegar products through technology intervention.     To avoid fiery disasters, one professor has a rather bananas idea: Barath Raghavan thinks growing groves of banana trees around towns and cities could help halt these now-yearly tragedies.

CAMBODIA: Mangoes receive official approval for export to China     VIETNAM: Fruits, vegetables sector sets $10 billion export target

Cambodian mangoes produced at a small group of approved packaging factories have been cleared for export to China, as a result of recent improvements of factory compliance to phytosanitary requirements .     Vietnam’s agricultural sector has determined to improve quality to meet import market standards and achieve the export target of $10 billion by 2030.

BANGLADESH: Early pineapple harvest benefits farmers     INFO: Bananas are becoming more expensive everywhere and may even disappear

Though the peak time for harvest starts from late May or the first week of June, many farmers of Rangamati and Khagrachhari, and some of Moulvibazar have started picking Honey Queen pineapples early to get a good price during Ramadan.     The global market for bananas has experienced a number of shocks: information is spreading in many countries’ media about imminent complete disappearance of bananas, and their prices are high everywhere, according to EastFruit.

CHINA: Banana growing boosted in Lancang-Mekong region     BANGLADESH: Bumper mango production likely in Rangpur region

China plans to help countries in the Lancang-Mekong region tap their banana-growing potential, the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences said.     Officials of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) as well as farmers are expecting a bumper mango production following smooth formation of the tender fruits in Rangpur agriculture region.

ETHIOPIA: Could solar-dried papaya relieve malnutrition?     STUDY: Avocado compound targets enzyme critical to leukaemia cell growth

Led by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), a four-year project to turn papaya fruit into a nutritious and affordable snack is being developed for low-income consumers in Ethiopia.     A compound in avocados could offer a route to better acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) treatment, according to a new study from the University of Guelph, Canada.

KENYA: Avocado exports hit 72,000 tons in 2020     THAILAND: Durian quality inspection program begins

Kenya’s exports of avocados hit 72,000 tons in 2020, up from 59,000 tons recorded in the previous year, a government official said.     Chantaburi province, the largest durian-growing area in Thailand, is inspecting farms that have low quality fruits.

THAILAND: Rainbow Mango “Mahachanok” enters Korea after 9 years of endeavor     RUSSIA: Fruit imports in January 2021 were marked by a drop in supplies of bananas and apples

Thai Trade Center Seoul organized Thai Fruit Promotion to launch the Mahachanok mango variety's availability in Korean markets.     Russian fruit imports in January 2021 remained virtually unchanged compared to the same month in 2020, but changes in the import structure were significant.
