Among orders for pineapples grown in Shan State’s Seikkhaung, the majority is placed from Yangon Region, said pineapple farmers.
Pineapples produced from Seikkhaung are sweeter than those of other species, more popular, and more expensive.
“Pineapple is just harvested and Seikkhaung is the biggest producer. People prefer Seikkhaung pineapple. There are pineapple farms in Taunggyi but Seikkhaung fruits are sweeter, the yield is larger and the price is higher. The price varies depending on size,” said a pineapple farmer.
Around Hsihseng Township, Seikkhaung pineapple also known as honey pineapple and other local pineapple species are mainly grown. Seikkhaung’s pineapple is also called honey pineapple as it tastes as sweet as honey with thin skin and a small core.
Pineapples produced from southern Shan State are distributed inside the state and to Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, and Yangon. This year pineapple prices are better than in previous years, helping farmers earn more profits.
