The International Tropical Fruits Network (TFNet) has been invited to join the newly established Malaysia–Fiji Business Council as a founding member, providing a new platform for the Network to strengthen engagement and cooperation between Malaysia and Fiji.
TFNet Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Muhamed Salim bin Mohd Ali, was invited to attend the official launch of the Malaysia–Fiji Business Council on 11 August 2026 at Element by Westin, Kuala Lumpur. The Council was officially launched by Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, the Honourable Sakiasi Raisevu Ditoka.
The programme was also attended by His Excellency Etueni Qiolele Caucau, High Commissioner of the Republic of Fiji to Malaysia, together with representatives from the business community and founding members of the Council.
During the meeting, participants were briefed on Fiji’s economic priorities, investment climate and opportunities to expand bilateral trade and investment. A Ministerial Dialogue also provided an opportunity for business representatives to exchange perspectives with the Minister on strengthening Fiji–Malaysia economic ties and identifying potential areas for future cooperation.
Trade between the two countries presents considerable opportunities for further diversification. In June 2026, Fiji exported approximately RM1.28 million worth of goods to Malaysia while importing approximately RM203 million from Malaysia. Fiji’s principal export to Malaysia during the month was copra, valued at approximately RM1.24 million, while major Malaysian exports to Fiji included refined petroleum, soybean oil and rapeseed oil.
As an invited founding member of the Malaysia–Fiji Business Council, TFNet will seek to contribute particularly in areas related to agriculture, tropical fruits, agribusiness, market access, trade facilitation and business-to-business linkages. The Council also provides a useful platform for TFNet to connect its network of member countries, research institutions and industry partners with potential collaborators in Fiji and the wider Pacific region.
TFNet’s participation in the Malaysia–Fiji Business Council is in line with its broader efforts to strengthen international partnerships and facilitate greater cooperation across the tropical fruit value chain, particularly by connecting research, production, trade and investment opportunities between Asia and the Pacific.
