The current supply of Australian avocados is mainly coming from Western Australia and Tristate growing regions, with smaller volumes from southeast Queensland and NSW. It is looking like there will be a strong supply this year, the Hass variety is the most dominant variety currently available.

In Australia, for 2023-24, per capita avocado consumption was 5Kg per person. Avocados Australia expects to see an increase in per capita consumption in FY26.

“Supply and demand will dictate where prices are this season,” commented John Tyas, CEO at Avocados Australia. “Australian avocado exports have increased seven-fold over the last few years, and we have a significant market share in Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. We plan to continue to build on our presence in Thailand, India, Japan, and the Middle East. Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong are taking the highest volumes of Australian avocados currently. We are the main supplier to these markets all year round.”

New and developing markets
“We are still developing the Indian market, and it will take time to grow, but we are confident we will be a significant player. We know we will face strong competition from low-cost producers at certain times of the year. We expect increased volumes from WA this year and we are continuing to invest in market development activities in this market.”

Market access to China
“We are committed to the Chinese market access process. Access is reliant on the successful negotiations between the Australian Government and the Government of China and this will take time. However, we are building our credentials in this market in preparation for future market access, and it is clear that there is very strong demand in China for Australian avocados.”
