Vietnam’s banana exports reached US$257.1 million during the first eight months of 2026, according to the Vietnam Customs Department. Bananas ranked second among the country’s fruit exports after durian, accounting for approximately 8% of export value, compared with 5.4% a year earlier.

China remains a major export destination, supported by a phytosanitary protocol signed in November 2022. Japan and South Korea are also markets for Vietnamese bananas, with shorter shipping distances contributing to lower logistics costs.

Vietnam has approximately 160,000 hectares under banana cultivation, yielding nearly 2.5 million tons annually. Dong Nai accounts for more than 70% of banana acreage in the Southeast region.

Japan imported more than 46,000 tons of Vietnamese bananas in 2025, nearly 40% more than in 2024. Vietnam’s market share increased from 0.24% in 2019 to 4.36% in 2025, making it Japan’s fourth-largest banana supplier.

Under the CPTPP tariff schedule, Japanese import duties on Vietnamese bananas are expected to reach 0% by 2028. Exporters must continue meeting phytosanitary, food safety, traceability, and packaging requirements to maintain market access.
