Less than two weeks before the Hass avocado campaign comes to a close in Malaga, the results are said to be excellent, both in terms of price and quality, as explained by Sigfrido Molina, manager of Sigfrido Fruits.

“Backed also by imports, our domestic avocado campaign has been superb. The purchase price per kilo for Spanish avocados has remained at an average more than 70 cents higher than last season in European destinations. The growing prices, result of a decline in production volumes this year, have also brought balance between supply and demand,” he explains.

Colombian avocados have arrived to the European market with force this year, with already quite significant volumes, and their production is expected to continue growing in the coming years. According to Sigfrido Molina, Colombian avocados arrive at much more affordable prices, even cheaper than the Israeli.

“It is a country that is only starting with the production and export of Hass avocados and still has much to learn. Among other factors, their plantations have seven to eight blooms, so the fruit develops differently until it reaches its final destination; with fruit of the same size, but at different levels of maturation, leading to major issues in the marketing. However, we believe that Colombia is emerging as a major strategic partner for future campaigns,” he points out.

Once the stock of Spanish avocados has been depleted, Sigfrido will continue supplying European retailers with Peruvian avocados, and also, for the first time, with South African fruit.

“The earliest avocados from Peru already arrived on the market a few weeks ago, but fat levels are still not optimal; that is why we wait until March to market the first Peruvian Hass.”

Greater presence of tropical products on social media
Sigfrido Fruit surprised us a few weeks ago with its new application for mobile devices and is now launching a new website and invites our readers to visit it.

“In our new website, we want consumers to become involved, showing them the myriad benefits of eating mangoes and avocados, as well as the many ways to consume them. In our own YouTube channel, we show very interesting videos outlining how to include mangoes and avocados in the Mediterranean diet.”

Sigfrido recently pioneered the idea of making the first paella with avocados, which was successfully presented in Valencia.
