The Ministry of Agriculture intends to partner with the county government of Uasin Gishu to sensitise locals on the importance of avocado farming.

The ministry also intends to provide avocado seeds to every interested farmer in the county.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett said the ministry has already found ready market for the fruits and that farmers should venture into avocado farming.

“We are going to partner with the county government of Uasin Gishu to sensitise residents on the importance of farming avocado fruits and the profits behind the venture. We have already found markets for the fruits outside Kenya. Asia and European countries are very interested in the product,” he said.

Speaking on Friday when he met Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago in his office at county headquarters, the CS urged the county department of agriculture to work closely with the Ministry of Agriculture to make the project a success.

He said farmers should take advantage of the opportunity and start preparing seeds for planting since the trees take months to mature.

Governor Mandago hailed the project, noting that it will transform lives of locals and urged the CS to roll out the plan immediately.

He said his government will provide any needed support for the project, including sensitising locals and helping them to get the required materials for the project.

“If there is an already made market, this means we should not waste any more time. We need to make sure our farmers use this opportunity to expand the horticulture sector. My government will support the project where necessary,” he said.
