By mid-March, the Mexican mango season will be picking up for Higueral Produce, Inc., which is based in Rio Rico, AZ.

Higueral received the season’s first shipment on Feb. 19. Edgar Duarte, a partner in the firm, said the mangos “look really nice,” noting that the majority of mangos are Atualfos. The fruit is packed under Higueral’s “Del Rio” brand.

The sizing of the fruit is larger, “but there are a few smaller sizes of fruit,” said Duarte. “We will be receiving four or five loads a week for two or three weeks,” he continued. “The volume will pick up in mid-March.” More round mango varieties will be available at that time as well.

“Looking and production and quality, they both look pretty solid,” he added. The early mango market was at $12 per box for larger-sized Atualfos and averaged “ten down to seven dollars on the smaller sizes.”

Duarte expected the market to decline as volume increases in March.

Higueral typically receives mangos into August.
