Tropical fruit growers believe there will be demand for New Zealand-grown bananas.
The Government plans to spend nearly $100,0000 to help develop a banana growing industry in Gisborne.
Tropical Fruit Growers of New Zealand chairman Hugh Rose is backing the idea.
He told Larry Williams there are already New Zealand-grown bananas being sold in the Far North.
“Try and go and buy a banana down at the market on Saturday morning, they are sold out by eight’o’clock.”
Rose says New Zealand won’t be able to beat overseas growers on price – but we could, however, beat them on taste
“Enthusiasts over the years in the gardens of New Zealand have been creating some amazing different flavours just waiting to be found.”
