TROPICAL FRUIT NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

AUSTRALIA: Panama disease threatens banana plantations, supply of Lady Finger and Ducasse varieties at risk     VIETNAM: Dragon fruit exports fall

A highly destructive fungal disease known for wiping out entire banana crops, is devastating plantations on the New South Wales Mid North Coast, putting local supply in jeopardy.     Vietnam’s dragon fruit exports fell 10 per cent for the January-November period of 2020, as the Covid-19 pandemic hit hard.

MALAYSIA: Researchers have turned pineapple leaves into drone parts     CAMBODIA: Exporters poised to ship fresh mangoes to China in early 2021

Malaysian researchers have developed a method to transform the fibre found in normally discarded pineapple leaves to make a strong material that can be used to build the frames for unmanned aircraft, or drones.     Cambodian Keo Romiet mangoes remain on target to be directly exported to the Chinese market after the economic powerhouse penned an agreement in June 2020 that set up a 500,000 tonne quota for the Kingdom’s widely-available fruit.

IRAN: Over 300,000 tons of banana imported in 9 months     HONDURAS: Banana sector needs USD 40 million to ensure the next banana harvest

Iran has imported 308,970 tons of banana worth USD 210.32 million during March-December 2020, according to the spokesman of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA).     The banana sector needs to invest nearly USD 40 million to recuperate from the damage caused by tropical storms Eta and Iota to ensure the next fruit harvest on the first half of 2022.

INDIA: Integrated machine developed to process banana stem into fibre yarn     PARAGUAY: Banana exports increase by 33%

The faculty and the students of the Kancheepuram-based Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM) have come out with an integrated machine that can process the banana trunk or pseudo-stem to make fibre yarn, sap water and other products.

According to data from the Single Export Window (VUE) of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC) of Paraguay, in 2020 banana exports grew by 33% over the previous year, totaling USD 15,621,246.

CAMBODIA: 2020 mango export earns USD 470 million     MALAYSIA: Early preparation saves pineapple harvest

In 2020, Cambodia exported more than 945,274 tonnes of fresh mangoes to foreign markets, with an estimated total value of some USD 473,207,700.     The current monsoon season has not affected the pineapple production in Alor Bukit, Pontian, as farmers made preparations from as early as October to face such weather before the season started.

TOGO: The pineapple sector is buoyant     MEXICO: Avocado exports forecasted to be up for Super Bowl

The pineapple industry, mainly oriented towards processing and export, produces more than one million liters of pineapple juice, 20% (200,000 liters) of which is destined for the organic market.     The coronavirus pandemic won’t stop Mexico from sending a huge quantity of avocados to the United States in the lead-up to the Super Bowl to be played February 7 in Tampa, Florida.

PERU: Avocado exports increased by almost 100,000 tons in 2020     INDIA: Gujarat CM renames dragon fruit as ‘kamalam’, draws flak

Peru exported 410,463,231 kilos of avocado in 2020, i.e. 32% or almost 100 million kilos more than the 310,870,326 kilos it exported in 2019.     The Gujarat government’s move to rename dragon fruit as ‘Kamalam’, since according to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani the fruit’s outer shape resembles a lotus, has brought about flak in the internet.

CHINA: Thailand urged to adopt WHO guidelines to ensure durians free of COVID-19     VIETNAM: Fruit and vegetable exports hit over USD 3.2 billion in 2020

China is encouraging Thailand to adopt World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) guidelines, to establish confidence in exported durians and maintain a market worth 50 billion baht (USD 1.6 billion).     Vietnam earned USD 3.26 billion from exporting fruit and vegetables in 2020, a year-on-year decline of 13%, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has reported.

INDIA: How frozen ripe jackfruit is slowly making its way into the market     PHILIPPINES: Demand for fruit-based processed food products on the rise in Europe

Bibil Thomas, a 29-year-old software engineer from Kumily in Idukki district of Kerala, has launched Jackobyte, which retails frozen ripe bulbs of jackfruit with a shelf life of three months. However, if blast freezing is done (-40 degree Celsius) the stock will last for two years.     Healthier lifestyles and less sugar consumption in Europe create opportunities for Philippine fruit-based processed food. Dried and frozen fruits, as well as fruit purées, have the biggest potential in these markets.
