TROPICAL FRUIT NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

STUDY: World’s stinkiest fruit could make super-fast electric chargers FRANCE: Two major innovations for eco-friendly exotic fruit and vegetable packaging

Durian has a commendable nutritional value and as per a recent study, might just be the best possible material for lightning-fast electric charging for gadgets and electric vehicles alike. A company in France has developed 2 innovations to reduce the use of plastics in packaging: Food-safe ink and biocompostable cardboard and plastic made from birchwood.

STUDY: How ancient tooth plaque solved the mystery of the banana’s trans-pacific journey USA: Can Disease-Sniffing Dogs Save the World’s Citrus?

3,000-year-old microparticles prove the fruit traveled across the ocean with early Pacific Islanders.

Gottwald may have a creative new strategy to diagnose citrus greening: one that relies not on vision, but smell. They’ve taught dogs to recognize the telltale scent of a huanglongbing infection.

HONDURAS: Visiting experts from Taiwan share knowledge about Fusarium CAMBODIA: Banana exports solid but mangoes struggling as Novel Coronavirus affects fresh fruit markets

A delegation of Taiwanese experts in the cultivation of bananas has traveled to Honduras in a Technical Cooperation Mission with the objective of evaluating the capacity to prevent the entry of Fusarium Wilt. Fresh bananas are still being exported to the Chinese market but fresh mangoes to South Korea have been badly hit by the Novel Coronavirus effect on fresh fruit markets.

VIETNAM: Mutual exports with India expected to increase VIETNAM: Companies rescue farmers from the plummeting price of fruits

With the comprehensive strategic partnership and large purchasing power, Vietnam and India have the potential to increase two-way trade via boosting mutual exports of their strong commodities. The low price of fruits has affected the income of small farmers in Vietnam and many enterprises have stepped in to the rescue.

PHILIPPINES: Banana group says coronavirus dampens exports to China MALAYSIA: Durian industry stung by low prices as coronavirus outbreak affects demand from China

Work stoppages and market closures in China stemming from the coronavirus epidemic are hurting small- and medium-sized banana growers in the Philippines. The prices of durians in Malaysia have dipped as demand from China fell following the novel coronavirus outbreak.

AUSTRALIA: Panama disease tropical race 4 detected in Far North Queensland BERMUDA: Mealybugs place banana imports in jeopardy

A devastating fungal disease with the potential to wipe out banana crops has been detected on a farm in Far North Queensland — the heart of Australia’s growing district. A spokeswoman for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources said that officials have worked with importers to tackle pest contaminations and the expensive inspection process needed to block the pests.

PHILIPPINES: ‘Kurikong’ disease threatens mango export KENYA: Mango boom sees region smiling its way to the bank

Cecid fly infestation threatens the yield of the supposedly “sweetest mango” in the world, even as Philippine government researchers are in the thick of finalizing their studies on how to address the problem caused by the bug. Mangoes are the new gold in Makueni County, with many residents picking thousands of shillings from the fruits, especially at this time when they are in season.

USA: Hawai‘i international tropical fruit conference set for fall PERU: 10,000 tons of mango can’t be exported to China because of the coronavirus

Hawai‘i International Tropical Fruit Conference will celebrate its 30th year this fall, scheduled for 25-27 September. Avocado producers from Casma in the Ancash region are very concerned about the halt of mango and avocado exports to China due to the coronavirus health crisis.

INDIA: Farmers keen to shift to MD2 pineapple variety AUSTRALIA: New mango varieties hit shelves after frustrating wait ends for growers

Pineapple farmers are keen to switch at least a part of their holdings to the MD2 from the dominant Mauritius variety as the former can be easily processed and have a much longer shelf life. New mango varieties grown on a north Queensland farm have been given the taste test for the first time, with retail trials passing the first hurdle.

UGANDA: Pineapple prices fall to USD 0.06 in Masaka, farmers stuck USA: Avocado lace bug confirmed on Hawaii Island
